Christiansburg's Planning Commission is taking care of some housecleaning items at their meeting today, including recommendations to Town Council on the mandated, minimum updates for establishing floodplain districts, and a conditional use permit for 111 Second Street to allow in-home elderly or handicapped residential use.

They again have the issue of regulating electronic messaging signs to discuss, yet most know the horse left the barn and any action won't eliminate the issues which brought this matter to the town's attention more than a year ago.

Also, the provisions for possible Historic District Overlays seems to now have some urgency and reappears on the agenda.  This item has languished more than 18 months since being assigned by the Town Council,.  No plans or actions have been taken based on information the PC requested from Virginia Tech faculty and students in the Department of Urban Affairs & Planning, or the Virginia Department of Historic Resources

Council itself will meet as usual on Tuesday at 7:30 pm and is expected to give cursory approval for the zoning related items., listed above  They will also reorganize, select a Vice-Mayor and give authorization for signing checks.  Eight committee appointments will be made with only three -- Street, Finance and Cemetery -- taking regular actions having significance for most town residents.

A closed meeting for the discussion of personnel matters may be expected to result in a pay increase for the town's top employees -- if  the same path as last year is taken again.  If precedent is followed, no vote to act on items discussed will occur when they return to open session.  Then an Appointment of Officers is on the agenda, but this doesn't explain why these positions report directly to the Town Manager rather than Council itself (as per Town Charter)

The agenda does not specify the aquatic center, tourism development funding, proposed changes to financial reporting formats, future bus service to be provided by Blacksburg Transit, or numerous other open items will be discussed -- yet often are brought up.
