One wouldn't generally
think "Christiansburg" when contemplating avant garde technology; however, it seems some folks are just discovering the blog. And this appears to be a new wilderness to those unfamiliar with the worldwide web.
Blogging, an internet tool, allows individuals to journal or write or muse or pontificate about any topic imaginable. Many blogs are focused on special topics (parenting, politics) with human life -- or quality of life -- issues being strongly represented in the blogosphere. Some blogs are very personal or self-focused, while others may be seen as expounding extreme views. A key point is that dissemination of information or expressing one's opinion is generally seen as something Americans are entitled to, that being freedom of speech. And just like last century's technology, the user has the choice of turning the dial. Click, click.
On the local front, a new Christiansburg-focused blog started within the past week. Just think, another town resident sharing personal opinions about things happening or relative to our progressive, small town. You can check out this
blog and with only a few postings so far, the writer appears to be off to a good start.
On a national or worldwide scale,
Bloggers Unite is
calling all bloggers to join in an event scheduled for
May 15. Stating it is "an initiative designed to harness the power of the blogosphere to make the world a better place," this is a challenge to blog about a social cause of your choosing. "A single day, a single voice can be joined with thousands of others to help make a real positive difference; from raising awareness for cancer, to an effort to better education systems or support third world countries."
So whether you are reading this in Christiansburg or Richmond, Canada or Mexico or anywhere else -- put down your pen and pick up your keyboard. Find a subject (or even a cause). Express yourself, and blog on.
