Several significant items will be on the Christiansburg Planning Commission's agenda when they meet Monday, June 2, 2008 at 3:00 pm in the town hall.
Intention to adopt an ordinance to rezone property in Downtown
A Conditional Use Permit to allow a Downtown dental laboratory
Consideration of amendment to advertising code for business signage
These items then go before Town Council with a recommendation. But first, often a public hearing is required. So these are placed on town council's agenda, and then the Planning Commission retires again (and the council meeting is recessed) for another review and/or discussion of these topcis. Many times, the citizens who come to speak at the public hearings are not aware they can follow the Planning Commission out of the room and listen to final discussions. This process is meant to demonstrate the commissioners are taking public comments into consideration, even if they generally come to a consensus at the Planning Committee meetings.
The Town Council's next meeting will be the following day, Tuesday, June 3 at 7:30 pm. Note that FOIA requires public notification five (5) days in advance, but agendas continue to be made available sometime late in the afternoon on the day before these meetings. This meeting may also include the second reading of the proposed FY 2008-09 budget, and it must be adopted by June 30 (end of the current fiscal year).
And FOIA training is scheduled for this same night, to follow the regular town council meeting. Plan to attend Tuesday night, and learn how to promote open (ie, good) government.
