The Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program (MCEAP) provides support to families and individuals experiencing immediate or temporary hardship.  This agency coordinates efforts for those who do not qualify for public assistance or have exhausted benefits in partnership with all major social service agencies, and civic or religious organizations.  The goal is to help community members through an emergency and back to self sufficiency.

Because of current economic conditions, many more people are in need of assistance.  And you can help.

One, do a little extra food shopping and help fill up the MCEAP pantry.  These donations can be taken to their offices at 110 Roanoke Street (between Christiansburg Town Hall and the New River Valley Free Clinic).

Two, volunteer a few hours and wrap holiday presents at the NRV Mall.  Donating two or three hours of your time will benefit the MCEAP as fees charged for this service go directly to this agency.

Convincing shoppers that this is one less task they need to complete (and won't have to buy tape and wrapping paper and bows or boxes) is easy -- especially when they know it helps fill a need in our community.

Setting up a time that fits into your own schedule is also easy -- just visit the United Way's Volunteer Solutions and you'll see a list of times where volunteers are still needed.  Go with a friend, and have even more fun.
