Three Town of Christiansburg council seats will be on the ballot May 6, 2008. Now is the time for residents to
engage in this election process.
If you've lived in Virginia for one year, are a current resident of the town when you file, and provide the signatures of 125 other registered voters who reside in town -- then, bingo! You, too, can have your name on the ballot. Candidate filings must be received by the voter registrar at the County Government Center no later than March 4. Instructions may be obtained at that office or via
http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/Index.html.
Council members serve “at large” which means they are to represent all residents, regardless of address, and there are no endorsements by organized political parties.
Who currently serves on Christiansburg Town Council? What type of leaders are they?
How do they vote on key issues, such as public services and safety?
How do they decide what to tax and how to spend those tax revenues?
The best way to determine answers to these questions is by attending a council meeting.
The newly elected council members will be sworn into office by September 1 and take an oath to uphold the
Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia and adhere to the
Christiansburg Town Charter, determining any new ordinances, zoning code changes and committee appointments.
Meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of each month, so there are
numerous opportunities to observe current town leaders between now and election night.
The next council meeting will be
Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 pm. at the town hall. It's free and open to the public!
