I think that the new bus service is ridiculous in the fact that they didn't even consider providing transportation to and from Blacksburg for all Christiansburg citizens that work in Blacksburg. Yet they want us all to go "green". Bah!
Actually, this is possible. Just requires that it is planned with "call ahead" service, rather than being spontaneous. If enough people called for this service regularly, it is more likely such service would become a standard route. Chicken or the egg, or cart before the horse -- which process would make it most likely to become an established habit or option.

Riders got stranded? I can see not picking up any new riders...but leaving people who had ridden the bus somewhere with no way to get home? There's something not right about that. Perhaps they should have stopped picking up people at 3 when the snow was starting to build up instead of continuing until the time they had to stop and leave people abandoned.
