As regards citizen participation, Christiansburg's oft referenced Comprehensive Plan states:

An important component of any Comprehensive Plan is the participation of the citizens of the locality in the development of the Plan.  Christiansburg has held public input meetings, conducted citizen satisfaction surveys, provided opportunities for comments in person, by mail, or via e-mail to the Town’s homepage.

C
itizen participation is not only a legal requirement, but is needed input to provide Town Council, the Planning Commission, and staff with information regarding the goals and visions of the community as a whole.  Before the Town can take action to meet the wishes of its citizens, the Town staff and officials must know what the citizens truly desire.

As regards the process, the plan indicates:

The Town of Christiansburg's first Comprehensive Plan was prepared by the New River Valley Planning District Commission and was adopted by Town Council in November 1975.  The Town Planning Commission and the New River Valley Planning District Commission subsequently updated the Plan in March 1984.  John I. Cofer and Associates, Inc. prepared an addendum to the Plan in 1988.  K.W. Poore and Associates, Inc. prepared an additional update that was adopted in December 1993.

The current Plan update has been prepared for the upcoming twenty-year period from 2003 to 2023.  Pursuant to Commonwealth of Virginia enabling legislation, “At least once every five years the comprehensive plan shall be reviewed by the local planning commission to determine whether it is advisable to amend the plan.“

We’d like to hear from any long-time or new residents – not associated with town council or council appointed committees  – about the various opportunities you had to provide input on the development or review of the Christiansburg Comprehensive Plan.  When responses are from individuals engaged in FIRE (finance, insurance, real estate) or as a construction industry professional, please indicate that, too.
