Interesting activities for Montgomery County citizens are on the calendar:
On Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3 pm at Blacksburg's Lyric Theatre, Iron Jawed Angels will be screened and free to the public. This 2004 HBO produced film highlights the suffragettes who in 1917 picketed the White House -- and the president ordered them arrested, where they were brutally treated while imprisoned until the free press became aware of their plight. The showing is being made available through a sponsorship with the VT Student Film Association and the Montgomery County League of Women Voters.
On Monday, Oct. 27 from 7:30 until 9 pm, the LWV is sponsoring a candidate forum for Montgomery County School Board - District A. Phyllis T. Albritton (appointed incumbent) and B. Amy Davey Mauldon will respond to questions, moderated by Christiansburg's Ann Hess. Because our public schools are funded by the county (with additional state and limited federal monies), decisions made by the school board affect all citizens. Candidates must run as independents (without political party affiliation) and represent all citizens, while being chosen from by voters in specific districts and serving school strands for Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Shawsville-Elliston and Auburn. The candidate forum will be held in council chambers, Blacksburg Town Hall.
On Tuesday, Nov. 18 three NRV members of the Virginia General Assembly will present their 2009 legislative priorities at a forum held from 7 until 9 pm at the Blacksburg Community Center, Patrick Henry Drive. The local chapter of the Virignia Interfaith Center for Public Policy planned the forum, which will be attended by Del. Anne Crockett-Stark, Sen. John Edwards and Del. Jim Shuler.
