A group of Christiansburg residents are collecting signatures to get the question of a change to local election dates on the ballot next November. The intent is to let the people decide if moving Christiansburg town elections (Mayor and Town Council) from May to November of odd numbered years is a good idea, and the effort has the support of council newcomer Henry Showalter.
Historically, voter turnout in May local elections is abysmal. Turnout "peaked" in Christiansburg at a mere 11.54% this past May. (Compare that to November 2007, with 38% and to November 2005 with 45.7%, non-presidential election years.) The choice of odd numbered years will keep the focus on local and state issues, while avoiding being overwhelmed during partisan campaigns.
In addition to potentially greater participation in local elections, a change from May to November of odd numbered years will, after just 4 years, save the Town money. Savings may happen sooner, as it is anticipated the Town will be split into two local precincts due to population growth.
If you are a Christiansburg resident, eligible to vote, and willing to help collect signatures on the Christiansburg petition to simply get the question on the ballot, please email tecinorbit@gmail.com with the times you are available. You will be contacted with your polling place assignment.
For more information, come to a meeting at 1pm Sunday, November 2 at the Coffee Depot in Downtown Christiansburg.
