This Saturday is Flag Day.  If you don't know much about this national holiday, you should plan on visiting the Christiansburg Branch of the library, Sheltman and Depot streets.  Author Marc Leepson will speak at 1 pm, to be followed by a flag retiring ceremony conducted by local Boy Scouts.

Another significant holiday focused on freedom is the annual "Juneteenth" celebration which originated in Texas over 100 years ago.  From 11 am until 6 pm, people will gather to honor enforcement of the emancipation proclamation at the Rosa Peters Park.  Community choirs, the outstanding NAACP youth presentations, dances and a fish fry will be the focus of these day-long activities.

If you don't know much about our region's cultural and historical heritage, you should plan on visiting the Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center on Pepper Street, Downtown Christiansburg, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm.  An exhibit featuring the history of agriculture in Montgomery County is on display along with an interactive art display.  A Farmer's Market featuring locally grown organic produce will complement a 3 pm lecture by VT's Prof. John Hillison on the history of the Future Farmers of America.

Each event offers special insights into diverse aspects of our collective local and national history.  Pick a venue or visit all three, and celebrate community and local heritage!
