The Christiansburg Town Council met on Tuesday, March 4th, and held two joint public hearings.  The first was on a conditional use permit (CUP) requested by Roger Roller to allow a home based business in a B3 General Business District.  This permit would allow for the sale of small animals, including reptiles.

Several neighboring residents were present and indicated concern about possible dangerous creatures.   Other speakers suggested allowing the business, yet initially restricting the types of animals, providing time to alleviate any concerns.  Council then granted conditional approval, subject to review within six months.

The second hearing was another conditional use permit (CUP) by C.L. Draughn for property at 655 Depot Street for residential use in the B3 General Business.  This request resulted in strong opposition as it was perceived as something that should be addressed through rezoning.  It involved razing an existing building and construction of density townhouses.  This property is within the Cambria Historic District and the concept appeared to be out of character with existing uses and recent initiatives to boost tourism.  It would also add traffic to one of the worst intersections within the town's borders as well as contribute to storm water or run off issues.  The matter was tabled until the proposed development's principals and other property owners could research concerns, including discussion that may lead to adoption of architectural standards.

A public hearing was then held to adopt an ordinance allowing the vacating of an unbuilt portion of Sunnyside Lane, which runs off of Depot Street near the new aquatic center site.  Subsequent action by council passed this change in its ordinance, which paved the way for later approval of a plat subdividing property of Alan D. Gillis on Sunnyside.  Neighbors should anticipate more construction there.

Planning and Zoning Commission members asked town manager to present their approved recommendations to council.

A boundary line adjustment for lots or parcels within Cambria Crossing was approved, and again additional construction should be expected.  Principals requesting this action were not noted in the agenda.

Council approved amendments to Chapter 29 of the Christiansburg Town Code for water and sewer charges, as relates to late charges.  This section of the code is not one of the few currently available on the town's website.

Council received information on a "Go Green" initiative, sponsored by the Virginia Municipal League (VML).  Additional information can be found at the VML website.

Council approved payment of the bills, including $15,000 for jerseys purchased by the Parks & Recreation Department.

The next town council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 18 at 7:30 pm in the Town Hall.   Citizens are encouraged to attend, noting three sitting council members will be on the ballot May 6.
