One of three Town of Christiansburg public meetings scheduled for today was canceled. This notice was sent out at 9:21 am:
"The meeting of the Aquatic Center Contract Committee scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 10:30 am has been cancelled."
This is the meeting called in order to have an ad-hoc committee, appointed Jan. 6th to get some clarity on certain terminology in the lease between the town and Virginia Tech for use of the new aquatic center, go into closed session. Our position was that there was no legal basis allowing such a meeting, especially for an ad-hoc committee.
Another related sidenote. The aquatic director was recently interviewed in a new Roanoke Valley magazine. If the Town Council and manager were surprised about a triathlon already scheduled at this new facility, one wonders whether they were aware the Virginia High School League is scheduled to hold 2010 state competitions there and other water niche sports such as water polo, synchronized swimming and kayaking are in the works. Read the article (page 50) and see if you can determine whether VT is just one entity leasing this facility or is instead an "ownership partner," as stated in the story.
It's cold outside, but as usual, council's regular agenda for tonight's meeting at 7:30 pm should prove stimulating .
