The League of Women Voters is 89 today.  This organization is a trusted place for citizens to discuss political issues, ask difficult questions and demanding accountability from their government.

In the 1950s, the League uncovered Sen. Joseph McCarthy's abuse of congressional investigations and has a long history of fighting for voting rights.

The League is non-partisan and might as easily be called the League of Citizen Voters because membership in one of the 850 national chapters is open to anyone regardless of gender, race, age, religion or any other label.

Learn more about the national League at www.lwv.org or see the local chapter's homepage at http://civic.bev.net/lwvmc/.  The Montgomery County chapter is known for sponsoring local candidate forums for town and county elections, as well as providing an outstanding "Voter Facts" booklet each year.

Happy birthday, LWV!
