The petitions relative to moving Christiansburg town elections (mayor and council members) have been notarized and turned in to the court clerk's office for review by a county judge and the registrar's office.
It's expected a week or more will be needed to cull through the names and addresses and certify these as residents of the town. From there, the state Justice Department conducts a review and then the General Assembly will be involved.
Voters have every right to expect this question to be on the November 2009 ballot. Voters have every right to determine when (and therefore where) town elections will be held.
In just one day, nearly 20% of all town voters signed one of these petitions. This represents more than twice the number of people who have come to vote during past May elections.
Seems that former councilman Steve Huppert was on to something a majority of town residents cared about, when he first brought this subject up before council last January.
Good job, Team Christiansburg!
