Flag Day is celebrated in the United States to commemorate the adoption of the "Stars and Stripes" as the national flag of our country. The Flag of the United States is the symbol of our nation, representing as many different feelings, facts and moments in history as there are people looking at it.
As expected, today’s fabulous Cruisin' Christiansburg event featured both American flags and sparkling results of American automotive engineering and manufacturing. (Yes, rain fell by the bucketful, but there were a few dry hours of fun and participation to enjoy.)
The unexpected presence of the League of Women Voters was a pleasant patriotic surprise. The modest set-up, with printed material and folks to answer questions, reminded us of the critical roles of voting, knowledge of candidates, and proper electoral procedure at all levels of government. If you don’t have a legitimate government, why have a flag?
Although Flag Day is not an official Federal holiday, it sparks a bit of national pride in most of us. The l-o-n-g delayed completion of Christiansburg's Main Street improvement project sparked a bit of local pride, too.
Let’s try to sustain this pride, and use it to work toward increased participation in Christiansburg's government. If we all pay attention and ask questions when we have them, maybe we can avoid months of delays in the next big town project.
Come to the Planning Commission meeting on Monday afternoon June 16, and to the Town Council meeting on Tuesday June 17 at 7:30pm. At the very least, you’ll be able to thank a couple of the key folks who put on today’s Cruisin' Christiansburg event.
