What's to be said? "The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors (BOS) will hold a public hearing Jan. 12 for comments on the County’s 2009-10 budget. The regular meeting of the Board will start at 7:15 p.m. The Board will also hold its organizational meeting to elect a chairman and vice chairman and set meeting dates for 2009."
With the financial crisis spreading -- more job losses, housing markets soft and values down, consumer spending and confidence stalled, state budget cuts that are not finished bleeding yet, and seeing the supervisors spend reserve funds (unbudgeted items) from their own "rainy day" account on non-critical items --we can still expect to hear taxes need to be increased. Again.
This should be just one opportunity for residents to watch local governments as they create budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. Attend and participate. A BOS resolution setting the full budget calendar for last year, however; is still on the county's web site instead of one for the upcoming budget cycle.
Christiansburg residents are still waiting to hear from Town Council, too, about what their desired budget development calendar will look like. Hopefully there won't be a repeat of 2008 when the town learned this is to be a public process.
Maybe this is saying something? Don't come, don't watch, don't worry, don't ask?
