Christiansburg Town Council will be meeting tonight at 7:30 pm in the municipal building.

While the town's Fire Department Honor Guard will present the colors and a long time employee will be recognized, all other business appears focused on zoning issues.

This includes a hearing for property at 3295 and 3301 Roanoke Street to change from agricultural or single family residential, to allow a contractor equipment storage facility.  The town's Comprehensive Plan identifies this area as MU-1; Mixed Use Residential and Limited Business in an area which has been known to have stormwater run-off issues.

Another zoning permit request hearing to consider property at 895 Park Street for an auto body shop  will be held.  Council discussed a similar request in the past and expressed concerns about the aesthetics and near-by parking issues.

Council is expected to take action on requests made by Community Housing Partners for the former Tekoa home and a planned housing development adjacent to Christiansburg Middle Schools.  Those public hearings were held Feb. 2.

Other public meetings scheduled for this week include the informal "Downtown Events Group" meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 in the Recreation Center.  Because Councilmen Henry Showalter and Ernie Wade are expected to both attend, the formerly inactive Central Business District Committee is scheduled to meet concurrently with this group.  The events committee is a result of efforts started by former Councilman (and now candidate) Steve Huppert.

The stated agenda is to "establish policy and procedures for future downtown events." The committee was given an assignment by Council in November 2007 (which has seen no action nor provided any updates), and previously had delegated a "tree survey" of downtown property owners to staff in 2005.
