There is a changing of the guard in Christiansburg's treasurer office, as two dedicated employees transition to retirement and a new hire continues to acclimate both to this region and her new duties.

Another news item recognizes the Town of Culpepper, where a similar office has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for the fifth year in a row.

Most people understand the direct benefits that can result from an effective use of resources.  One way this understanding develops is through clear and complete communication between constituents and government offices or officials, providing transparency on the "how" or "why" and "where" public funds are spent.

This award is something all local governments could strive for, emulating and adopting many of the best practices necessary to receive such recognition.

A first step for Christiansburg might be affiliating itself with such an organization, and providing employees (or appointees) with relevant training.  As such, these opportunities should not be limited to Council member-only retreats and conferences, and would include ongoing learning environments for any who choose to serve in a public capacity.
