At great expense in actual costs and personal time, the "Depot Dazed" blogger acquired many of Christiansburg's public documents through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests -- which in other communities are generally available on the locality's public website.
Cruise through this information by year, and enter a search word. Whatever interests you: aquatic center, history or historic preservation, rezoning requests, conditional use permits, where a "motion" was made and voted on, contracts, parking, taxes, closed meeting, an individual name, whatever. There are numerous instances when "public input" was stated as being sought, yet cannot be supported by these official documents.
You can respond to several surveys online now, and are encouraged to do so by visiting this site. Even easier than voting or attending meetings, yet providing a forum for voicing your thoughts or opinions. Another example is Councilman Brad Stipes, who has asked for input on changes to downtown parking. Parking around the courthouse has been an ongoing problem and the Board of Supervisors recently acquired more land to raze buildings and create more parking spaces, reportedly to comply with the town's tough parking requirements. Comments about downtown parking can be made at his blog, too.
You can quickly browse what town council reportedly discussed or acted upon. These documents, however, do not give a full picture of matters that affect our town -- quality of life or the direction it has taken over the past several years or what taxes are assessed and collected, and how they are used. You really need to be present, listen to all the dialog and make note of how motions are made and voted upon during the public meetings.
There is a saying that "no man is an island" and the same concept holds true for communities and families. One decision or action can have far reaching impacts on everything else.
It may be summer and school is out, yet now is the time to start educating yourself on the issues that will define our community tomorrow and for years in the future. Read up, get informed -- and get involved in defining how our community will look tomorrow and for the next generation, and what taxes or fees you are paying to the Town of Christiansburg in exchange for certain amenities or services.
